Homemade attacked by jaguar in MS was killed with bite on the head, says report

The Mato Grosso do Sul Civil Police (PCMS) confirmed that the Homemade Jorge Aval, 60, was killed by a jaguar in the Pantanal with a bite on his head . The attack took place on April 21.

The information is contained in the necroscopic report prepared by the Regional Forensic Medicine Center of Aquidauana, which concluded that the cause of death was an “acute neurogenic shock caused by perfur-contour action” in the upper segment of the body, reaching the head and cervical spine.

Also according to police, the deaths of the death and DNA site can offer more details about what happened and are underway and should take longer to finish.

Jaguar will be transferred

The jaguar will be transferred from the Hospital of the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center (CRAS) in Campo Grande. According to the latest medical report released by the government, the 94-pound male showed positive clinical evolution, normally breathing, feeding well and maintaining a stable health.

THE Government did not say, however, where the animal will be taken .

The animal arrived weakened at CRAS, with a high degree of dehydration, liver deficiency, kidney malfunction and was 26 pounds below the ideal weight. The first medical report described his state as a critical.

Based on this positive evolution, the animal will be transferred in the coming days. Additional details about the transfer will be released soon, according to the government.

Animal should not return to forest

As for the future destination, after recovery, the jaguar should not return to the Mata region where it was captured . It must be transferred to a room, which can be definitive or provisional, as soon as its rehabilitation is complete, the exams indicate stable condition and reversal of dehydration.

The Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio) and the State Secretariat of Environment, Development, Science, Technology and Innovation (Semades) will be responsible for defining the future of the animal.

The destination must be some fauna-maintaining institution able to receive it. In addition, the animal will be incorporated into the jaguar population management program, coordinated by ICMBio, which seeks to conserve the species in all Brazilian biomes.

Reasons for attack

The capture of this animal is considered essential to understand what motivated the attack, classified as a very atypical behavior to the species. Pintated jaguars and jaguars are usually afraid of man and tend to avoid his presence. The jaguar, in particular, is the least attacking humans among big felines, as it does not naturally see them as prey.

Investigations on the motivation of the attack are still underway. Hypotheses considered include food shortages, defensive behavior, reproductive period, or some involuntary attitude of the victim.

One of the few certainties so far is that there was food offer, known as Ceva, on site to attract wild animals. This practice, besides configuring environmental crime, is considered extremely dangerous, as it can cause changes in the natural behavior of animals, making them lose the natural fear of approaching humans.

Materials such as images of farm security cameras and animal routine videos were referred to expertise to help clarify the animal’s behavior and the moments that preceded the attack.

Biological samples, such as feces and blood, were also collected from the animal for analysis, seeking, among other things, to verify if there are traces of the victim. However, authorities point out that finding victim’s material in the animal does not allow to infer directly from the cause of death.

How is the region where the man was attacked

The Dead Taurus, where a 60 -year -old man died after being attacked, is located in the municipality of Aquidauana, in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul. The area is difficult to access and is about 150 kilometers from the city of Miranda.

Characterized by the wild nature, with dense vegetation and rich biodiversity, the region is an integral part of the South-Mato Grosso Pantanal biome. The municipality’s territorial area is 17,008.5 km², and of this total 75% is covered by the Pantanal.

A study by the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio) shows that the Pantanal is the Brazilian biome with the highest preserved species index. The region is a natural habitat of several animals, including jaguar and jaguar.

Researcher Heriberto Gimenes Junior, master in biology from the Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul (UFMS), points out that the geography of the Pantanal region and a series of factors that include the high degree of conservation of the ecosystem favor the preservation and refuge of species.
