Honduras: Former police chief accused of drug trafficking transferred to US

The plane of the American Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) took off this morning (local time) from the capital of Honduras, Tegucigalpa, carrying the former police chief Juan Carlos “El Tigre” Bonia, who was extradited to the USA accused of

Bonia, who served as Honduran police chief between 2012 and 2013 under the presidency of Porfirio Lombo, was arrested last March on toll booths north of the capital Tegucigalpa.

He has denied the allegations made by US prosecutors, who have been seeking his extradition for two years. “I am going with the help of the Almighty, with my head held high, with a clear conscience that I owe nothing to the United States,” Bonia wrote in a letter published last week in the Honduran media.

Earlier in the day, former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez pleaded not guilty to drug charges and possession of a firearm in a U.S. court following his extradition to the United States last month. Hernandez is accused of receiving millions of dollars from drug trafficking networks in exchange for granting them immunity.
