Jimmy Lai, the tycoon in the press, was sentenced to prison today (16/04). Hong Kong. He was convicted for his role in organizing in 2019 two major demonstrations and will serve a total of 14 months.
The 73-year-old was initially sentenced to 12 months in prison for the organization of a gathering and then to an additional 8 months in prison for his participation in another demonstration.
The second sentence concerns a demonstration that took place on August 31, 2019. On that day, tens of thousands of people gathered on the occasion of the fifth anniversary of Beijing’s refusal to hold universal suffrage elections in Hong Kong.
The demonstration led to violent clashes between police and extremists.
According to APE-MPE, apart from Jimmy Lai, former MP Li Chuk-yan was sentenced to 6 months in prison and another well-known member of the democratic movement, Jung Sum, to suspended sentence.
