Hong Kong: Pro-democracy activist Agnes Chow is free

The activist of the pro-democracy movement Hong Kong Agnes Chou was released after serving a seven-month prison sentence for her role in anti-government protests in 2019.

Her release coincides with the second anniversary of the crucial demonstration on June 12, 2019, when an estimated one million people protested against the government’s proposal to allow extradition to mainland China. The police had then tried to dissolve protesters by throwing chemical and plastic spheres, in a confrontation that gave the tone for increasingly intense demonstrations during the summer and turned the protest to a wider anti-government movement.

Supporters gathered outside the Tai Lam penitentiary today to express their support for the 24-year-old activist. Leaving prison, Chow got into a car and left without making statements to reporters, according to the state-run RTHK network.

About 2,000 police officers have been put on alert today as calls have been made on social media for demonstrations in honor of today’s anniversary. A ban on demonstrations remains in place in the metropolis, a measure taken to tackle the coronavirus pandemic, although only three new cases have been reported in the past month.
