Hong Kong Pro-Democracy Protest Film Wins Oscar Prize in Chinese

A documentary about pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong won a prominent prize at the Golden Horse Awards, the version of the Oscar for the Chinese-speaking world, in Taiwan, on Saturday (27).

Kiwi Chow’s “Revolution of Our Times” was named best documentary, generating a long round of applause and cheers for Hong Kong from the audience at the Taipei event.

Chow, who sent a pre-recorded message from Hong Kong thanking them for the award, dedicated the film to the people of Hong Kong, saying he hoped the production would bring them some comfort.

“I cried a lot when I produced this movie; I have consoled myself with this film several times, to express my anger, hatred, to face my fear and trauma,” he said, his voice choked with emotion.

Native Hongkonger Chow’s film follows several protesters and document clashes with police during the 2019 demonstrations, and he had previously told Reuters that he hoped the documentary would help the pro-democracy movement live. It was shown at this year’s Cannes Film Festival as a surprise addition.

China introduced a comprehensive national security law for Hong Kong more than a year ago to crack down on what it considers subversion, terrorism and complicity with foreign forces.

Since then, cinemas, universities and art galleries have canceled exhibitions of works related to the protest. Protesters have won widespread support and sympathy in Taiwan, which is democratically governed.

China, which claims Taiwan as its own territory, in 2019 blocked the country’s film industry from participating in the Golden Horse Awards, founded in 1962 and held annually in Taiwan.

Beijing’s move was followed by turmoil in 2018 in China and among Chinese stars at the awards ceremony, after Taiwanese director Fu Yue made comments in support of Taiwan’s formal independence, a red line for Beijing.
