Hong Kong: The iconic Jumbo floating restaurant sank

Titles finally fell for the emblematic float and famous all over the world restaurant His jumbo Hong Kong which sank and is now at a depth of about 1,000 meters.

Jumbo was one of the city’s most distinctive restaurants with a long history and was part of the ambitious Jumbo Kingdom experience in Abertin.

Built in 1976, it could accommodate up to 2,300 visitors and was screened in the classic films The Protector and The God of Cookery.

The three-story ship, whose exterior was designed as a Chinese imperial palace, flourished during the heyday of Hong Kong, often visited by celebrities such as Queen Elizabeth II and Tom Cruise.

The company has suffered huge financial losses in recent years (the restaurant has not been profitable since 2013) and closed in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The restaurant, according to the Athenian News Agency, was to be towed to be renovated by a new manager but during the towing process in the South China Sea, a storm broke out which sank it.

The barge-like restaurant is now on the seabed near the Paracel Islands and is almost impossible to restore.

The news was met with surprise on the internet, with many Hong Kong social media users mourning the end of one of Hong Kong’s most recognizable historical symbols.

Many users have posted farewell messages or fond memories of their restaurant visits in the past.
