Hong Kong’s famous floating restaurant Jumbo sank on Sunday after encountering “adverse conditions” in the South China Sea. No crew members were injured, according to a statement from Aberdeen Restaurant Enterprises posted on Twitter.
“While passing the Xisha Islands in the South China Sea, the vessel encountered adverse conditions in which water soon entered before starting to tilt.”
The company added that it was “very saddened” by this incident. “Despite the efforts of the towing company responsible for the trip to rescue the vessel, unfortunately, it capsized on Sunday.”
The vessel, which resembled a Chinese imperial palace, has hosted celebrities such as Queen Elizabeth II and Tom Cruise with Cantonese cuisine since 1976.
Residents bid farewell to the iconic Jumbo Seafood Restaurant on Tuesday, as it was towed away from the site that had been its home for 46 years.
In 2020, Jumbo ended its operations due to the Covid-19 pandemic. After months of illness restrictions, its parent was unable to find a new owner and had no funds to maintain it.
