Honor Watch GS Pro, a battle smartwatch

The new smartwatch from Honor, a company famous for its smartphones that also makes “smart watches” worthy of attention, is a real warrior. As the new Watch GS Pro, which has a really gritty look, especially in the particular version Blu Camoufflage we are trying (the other colors available are black, Charcoal Black, and white Marl White): you immediately understand that adventure is just around the corner. Not for nothing it meets the military standard 14MIL-STD-810G (having passed temperature tests, humidity tests and vibration tests) and is built to withstand the harshest environments. And indeed there are numerous sporting challenges that can be faced with the help of this new product.

Honor Watch GS Pro has considerable dimensions: an advantage for those who want to see the information on the display clearly. If, on the other hand, you are looking for a slim product, you can stop reading.

Those who are continuing to explore will appreciate the feeling of robustness that this watch transmits. Despite this, it still remains light and, even after hours of use, it does not bother the wrist.

The large body securely secures to the strap – adjustable for all wrist sizes thanks to the numerous holes – with a very solid hook system that makes it unlikely to lose it during use. The strap – with an ocean-inspired Camo Blue pattern – is made of woven nylon, a material that makes the smartwatch easier to clean in everyday use and is comfortable and smooth when worn.

The round screen is a 1.39-inch AMOLED that can adapt to different brightness levels, making it easy to use outdoors. The touchscreen – easy and intuitive – is “protected” from shocks by the particular design with sides that are not completely rounded.

The first time you start, there are many animated watch faces pre-installed. To emphasize the adventure look to the maximum we have chosen to combine it with the camouflage dial. But, of course, it is possible to opt for more classic dials – with digital hands or numbers – or more whimsical depending on the mood and situation.

The 316 stainless steel bezel is worth mentioning a high quality material capable of withstanding extreme environments, corrosion, acids and high temperatures and therefore often used to make high-end watches for extreme activities such as diving, skiing and hiking. From the aesthetic point of view it is inspired by the compass: at the top we find the N of the north engraved and in the lower part the S of the south and, along the entire circumference, the degrees.

On the right side of the crown – mounted on a central frame in reinforced polycarbonate – we find the buttons, easily identifiable even in movement thanks to their large dimensions and their geometric angles.

The top key takes you to the full menu and settings: essential and understandable even to those who are at the first experience with a smartwatch. The lower one gives access to over 100 training modes, including hiking, mountaineering, climbing, trail running, open water swimming, pool swimming, free training, triathlon, outdoor and indoor running, outdoor cycling ‘open and indoor, the elliptical, rowing and Hiit, the high intensity training. In addition, new skiing modes are also available, such as snowboarding and cross-country skiing.

Fundamental for a device specialized in outdoor activities is of course the GPS to understand your position, keep track of the weather and altitude. Thus, Honor Watch GS Pro has a double integrated high-precision satellite positioning system that allows not only to record the routes, but also to find the way. During a short trek, once we reached the destination we had set ourselves, we activated the «Route Back» function which allowed us to travel backwards and easily return to the car.

Also very useful in mountain environments ability to activate weather updates to avoid being surprised by showers or adverse weather conditions, the barometer for altitude and the compass, for adventurers old style. As for health, you can count on the SpO2 Monitor function, to monitor blood oxygen saturation levels, heart rate and sleep monitoring.

Like many smartwatches on the market there is the ability to manage phone notifications directly from your wrist, however, it is not possible to send messages (but only to read them), view images or access third-party apps, unlike Wear OS or WatchOS devices.

Overall, the smartwatch confirmed our expectations, except on the autonomy front, where it far exceeded them. Indeed, the battery lasts so long that you forget to recharge: with normal use the 25 days declared by the manufacturer are true. And there is no risk of being abandoned in the middle of an adventure.
