Hope to make way for others to come, says CNN content manager

The content manager of CNN, Letícia Vidica, CNN presenter on Plural gave a statement on Black Consciousness Day about racism and representation.

I am a black woman in a management position in a multinational company. I think that if we look at the world, except perhaps for Africa, I am in a minority and it is not cause for celebration. But I feel like a reference and I hope I’m opening a path for others to come.

Letícia also told about the idealization of her program on CNN Rádio, which in addition to analyzing racial issues, wants to open up space for gender discussions.

“CNN on Plural was born from an idea I already had. It’s a project I brought home to actually give space to the theme of diversity and inclusion in journalism, bringing other faces, other voices and themes that are linked to the racial issue, the issue of the LGBTQIA+ community, to people with disabilities, and open this space in the schedule.”

The content manager brought in her speech a moment of emotion during a day of work on the radio.

“I was on CNN Radio presenting CNN on Plural and a black intern looked at me at the end, started crying and said, ‘I lived to see this moment. I’m here thanks to you, I’m young, I’m peripheral, I come from a favela and I’m here living this moment now. Thank you so much for this’. That touched me so much that I said: ‘This is what I’m doing. That’s why I’m here.’”

Letícia Vidica recalls a violence she suffered at school, when she was still a child, and says that she “learned racism for life”

“At school, since I was little I remember an episode where I had a friend who was calling me names every day. He called me the Tasmanian Devil and that offended me, I didn’t understand why, until one day I came home and told my mother and her reaction, a black mother, was: ‘If you don’t react, it’s you who will catch’.”
