Hopes are lost for locating the submersible Titanwith experts giving their opinions on what caused the disappearance of the tourist boat with five people on board.
Radamanthys Foundoulakis, rear admiral, speaking to ERT, expressed the opinion that the small “submarine” broke up in the depths of the Atlantic.
“It is most likely that the vessel was crushed due to pressure and lack of material resistance and that it has broken up into pieces that cannot be detected by sonar,” said Mr. Fountoulakis, stressing, however, that there is always hope for a miracle.
The naval officer also referred to the technological capabilities of the small submersible and estimated that it did not have a tracking mechanism such as they have the regular submarines and research subs.
He focused on the fact that the “Titan” was white in color, which makes it difficult for his research efforts in contrast to research submersibles that are yellow and orange.
“This boat is made of fiberglass. It is an innovative vessel. There is not much evidence on the durability of fiberglass,” he said, adding that “it’s a matter of philosophy. Sometimes we let innovation go forward with a high risk” noted Mr. Fountoulakis.
He said it was a small submersible whose passengers had no means of self-escape as they could not even open the hatch themselves, describing the “Titan” as a sea barrel that was guided with a toy remote control.
“This particular vessel has an innovation. It does not self-submerge and does not emerge. He has his own base and dives with it. Then it launches and then operates autonomously with four electric motors. To emerge he goes and sits on the base and emerges with it” he explained saying that it is a clever innovation that allows him to operate in great depth.
“There are many scenarios. They could be stuck down and not be able to get out.”
“Every day they open the search area depending on the currents. I hope that the miracle we are all waiting for will happen, but as time goes on things get difficult. If they don’t find it, no one will.”
