‘Horrifying explosion and clouds of smoke’ in Beirut, fear of Israeli strike on Iran’s oil facilities

Israel continues to pound Lebanon, and a new Israeli strike this morning targeted the southern suburbs of Beirut, hours after extremely heavy overnight raids on this Hezbollah stronghold, according to the official Lebanese news agency ANI. AFP correspondents heard a terrifying explosion and saw clouds of smoke over the capital’s southern suburbs. For about two weeks now, the Israeli air force has been bombing the southern districts of the city, which the residents have abandoned. Meanwhile, Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati called on the world to “put pressure on Israel” to commit to a ceasefire after a night of heavy shelling in the southern suburbs of Beirut. In his statement, Mikati welcomed the statements of French President Emmanuel Macron, who “once again supported Lebanon” in reference to an upcoming international summit, reiterating his “support for the call of France and the US” for a ceasefire.
