A horrific experience was experienced on Monday (22/03) by the members of the Belize national football team, which is in Haiti for the match that will take place on Thursday (25/03) for the 2022 World Cup qualifiers in the CONCACAF zone (North, Central America and the Caribbean).
While the bus was heading to the hotel where the mission would end in the Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince, Unknown persons immobilized the vehicle with the threat of weapons. As you can imagine, everyone in the Belize national team “froze”.
Finally, the armed allowed the bus to pass, after negotiations with the escort police.
The team leader, Dion McCauley, described the scene as “a moment of intense fear”, while the rest of the internationals expressed to the media their desire to finish their obligations in Haiti as soon as possible, so that they could get up and leave.
This country is the poorest in the Caribbean, while the social situation is generally deplorable. In fact, it has been in a state of emergency since March 18, as some areas of it are controlled by gangs that attempt kidnappings and extortions and openly threaten the Police.
