A British court imposed a prison sentence on two women who were under the influence of alcohol tortured and killed female parrot of their friend, with the judge characterizing the cruelty they showed towards the defenseless creature. The horrific incident unfolded in July 2022 in the city of Carlisle.
According to what is transmitted by New York Post, Tracey Dixon, 47, and Nicola Bradley, 35, sprayed the bird, a African gray parrot named “Sparky» with oven cleaner, they covered it with paint and they tried to feed it to the dog. They then put it in the clothes dryer while the bird was still alive. Both defendants tried to blame each other, but they did not convince the judge who sentenced them both to 25 months imprisonment last Tuesday in Carlisle City Court. The two women were found guilty of “sadistic torture” of the parrot. “It really does not fit in my mind how a person can treat an animal like this,” said the Judge about the heinous act of the two women.
The unlucky bird belonged to Paul Crooks, a friend of the women, who on July 30 hosted the two women for a few hours at his home. The two British women had called Brooks to pick them up in the early hours of the morning from the nightclub where they were staying because they were too drunk to drive home. After picking them up in his car, he brought them to his house at 5.30 in the morning and he himself went to bed, while they continued to drink. When Crooks awoke at 8.30am he found his guests had poured shaving foam over Sparky’s cage. The man cleaned the cage and then left to go shopping after warning the two women not to touch his pet again.
When he came back, he found it unconscious bird, with his little head hanging out of the cage. At first the women denied that they had done anything, but after a while they admitted that they had sprayed the parrot with cleaning substances and furniture polish, and that they had hit it with a towel. They then tried to feed the parrot to the man’s dog, before finally putting it in the dryer, the court heard. Sparky cooled off shortly after her owner came home.
Crooks told the court that since the brutality he has had constant panic attacks and has trouble sleeping. As he explained, his life is no longer the same without the charismatic “Sparky”, who knew how to sing “God Save The Queen” and won the hearts of everyone who knew her, reports Guardian.
