Horror in Mozambique: Twelve people were beheaded

Twelve people, possibly foreigners, were beheaded after a jihadist attack in the city of Palma, Mozambique. the responsibility for which the Islamic State took, according to the director of local police.

Pedro da Silva, as broadcast by APE-MPE, told reporters who visited the city that is not sure about the origin of the 12 victims, but he thinks they were all strangers because they were white.

“They were tied up and beheaded here,” he told state television TVM, pointing to the site of the makeshift graves where, he said, he buried them.

Islamic State-linked insurgent groups have been operating since 2017 in the northern Mozambican province of Campo Delgado, where Palma is located. It is not clear, however, whether they all have a common goal.

Joint response from neighboring leaders

Leaders of neighboring countries, such as South Africa, Zimbabwe, Botswana, met in Maputo, the capital of Mozambique, earlier today to discuss their common response to this threat. Mozambican Foreign Minister Veronica Makamo Dlovo said they had decided to send a mission in April to assess the magnitude of the threat and take appropriate action.

According to the government, Dozens of people were killed in the attack that began on March 24. Aid agencies estimate the number of displaced in the thousands. The exact number of victims, however, remains unclear.

The army assures that Palma is now safe, as the guerrillas have been driven out of the last districts of the city.

The footage shown by TVM was taken outside the Amarula Hotel, where a large group of people, locals and foreigners, were besieged by jihadists for several days after the attack. They tried to escape in a motorcade on March 26 but were ambushed outside the hotel gates, killing seven people, including a Briton and a South African.
