The polygamous sect of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (FLDS) and the rise of the self-proclaimed prophet Warren Jeffs examines in depth a new documentary by Netflix entitled “Keep Sweet: Pray and Obey” (“Be Sweet: Pray and Obey”).
In 2008, a raid on the Yearning for Zion Ranch (YZR) in West Texas revealed gruesome evidence of sexual, physical and psychological abuse. More than 400 children were identified. Jeff was later arrested on a charge of child sexual abuse.
At the time of his arrest, he had 78 wives. 24 of them were under 17, according to Newsweek.
In 2011, the leader of the Mormon fundamentalist religious community was convicted by a West Texas court, to 119 years in prison for sexually assaulting a minor. The accusation came from his marriages with two girls aged 12 and 14.
“I provide this service in the name of Jesus Christ,” the 55-year-old was then heard saying in the audio recording of his sexual intercourse with underage brides, which was heard in court.

Jeffs, a self-proclaimed prophet, was the leader of a split sect of the Mormon Church, the so-called Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which advocates polygamy and is said to number about 10,000 members in North America.
Authorities raided a community ranch in Texas in 2008 and removed more than 400 children, who were placed under judicial protection.

The operation was launched after a phone call from a 16-year-old girl, who complained that she had been sexually assaulted and had given birth to a child by a 50-year-old man, who had married her illegally.
Jeff has previously been convicted in Utah of conspiracy to rape as he forced a 14-year-old to marry her 19-year-old cousin.
Warren Jeffs, now 66, is serving a prison sentence.
