Hospital in Gaza says it was warned of an air strike by Israel

The administration of Al-Quds Hospital in Gaza said the Israeli army demanded the immediate evacuation of the unit in preparation for a nighttime air raid.

The Palestinian Red Crescent also issued an urgent appeal saying it “received a threat from the occupation authorities to bomb Al-Quds Hospital and demanded the immediate evacuation of the hospital.”

Al-Quds Hospital currently houses more than 400 patients and approximately 12,000 displaced civilians who have sought refuge there as a safe haven, according to the Red Crescent.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it had asked residents of the northern area of the Gaza Strip to evacuate, to “mitigate civilian damage.”

“Hamas intentionally embeds its assets in civilian areas and uses Gaza Strip residents as human shields,” the IDF statement said.

The Palestinian Red Crescent Society has urged the international community to take immediate action to prevent a potential humanitarian catastrophe similar to the tragic incident at Al-Ahli Baptist Hospital, which was bombed on Tuesday (17).

In a statement, the Head of the Gaza Government’s Social Communications Office, Salamah Marouf, said that “medical teams made the decision not to respond to the threat of occupation and not to comply with evacuation warnings. They prioritize their humanitarian role and professional duties by remaining in their positions, and will continue to provide services to patients and the injured, as well as assist the displaced.”

Mai Alkaila, head of the Ministry of Health controlled by the radical Islamist group, issued a statement calling on “the international community and all international human rights organizations to intervene and protect Al-Quds Hospital from the threat of bombing.”
