Hospital in MS sets up swimming pool to baptize terminally ill elderly people

Teams from Santa Casa de Campo Grande (MS) installed a swimming pool inside the hospital to meet the request of a 79-year-old man admitted under palliative care: to be baptized according to the rites of the evangelical church to which he is a follower.

According to the hospital administration, the ceremony was held last week, after the patient had asked for three days for the baptism to take place.

“This patient expressed a desire to be baptized and the family was very distressed due to the difficulties in doing so. He already has an advanced clinical condition and his discharge will not be possible. Given this, we managed to mobilize several sectors so that we could carry out the baptism at the hospital”, explains palliative doctor Fernanda Romeiro, coordinator of the Special Care, Rehabilitation and Hospital Medicine Line at Santa Casa.

Given the impossibility of taking the elderly person to a church, the team decided to hold the ceremony inside the hospital, in the pool set up especially for this purpose. The religious rite was supported by the hospital's palliative care team and had the help of other sectors, such as Hygiene and Civil Firefighters.

The hospital management explains that “palliative care is the term used for a multidisciplinary approach that aims to treat all of the patient's suffering, whether physical, spiritual or other dimensions”. “In some cases, the team identifies that it is not just the physical symptoms that are causing the suffering, both for the patient and the family.”
