The first successful uterus transplant between living patients was carried out by the Hospital das Clínicas of the Faculty of Medicine of USP, on August 17th.
A woman who had been born without the organ due to a rare congenital malformation syndrome, received the organ from her own sister.
The procedure represents a significant advance in reproductive medicine and was conducted by the Gynecology Division and the Liver and Digestive Organ Transplant Service at HCFMUSP.
The person responsible for the surgery, Dr. Luiz Augusto Carneiro D’Albuquerque, said that the surgery went well and without any unforeseen events.
“The patients are in excellent general condition, showing complete recovery and the recipient has had a menstrual cycle for the first time,” he said.
The initiative took place in partnership with a Swedish medical team led by Mats Brännström, a pioneer in performing uterine transplants in the world and who made it possible for the first baby to be born from a transplanted uterus in 2014.
The patient who received the uterus will continue to be monitored by a HCFMUSP Gynecology team and will be able to undergo the first in vitro fertilization (IVF) approximately six months after the uterine transplant.
The director of Gynecology at Hospital das Clínicas, Edmund Baracat, explains that the transplant is psychologically very important for women who do not have a uterus, but emphasizes that the indication is restricted.
“This is an innovative, complex and high-cost procedure. The woman must be in good clinical condition and the couple must be able to generate healthy embryos. In the pre-transplant phase, ovarian stimulation and collection of the patient’s eggs, as well as her husband’s semen, were carried out for in vitro fertilization,” he states.
