Hospital roof collapses during storm in Rio de Janeiro; see video

The heavy rains that hit the west zone of Rio de Janeiro on Wednesday night (3) caused damage to the Pedro II Municipal Hospital. According to the Department of Health, the institution's gutter system was unable to withstand the volume of water, which caused a plasterboard ceiling to collapse, in addition to leaks in several parts of the hospital.

None of the patients who were in the room at the time of the collapse were injured. According to the ministry, teams are already in operation to carry out the necessary repairs, expected to be completed within 48 hours.

The hospital remains in operation. As a precautionary measure and to avoid overload, ambulances were directed to the Rocha Faria Municipal Hospital, in Campo Grande.

Isolated Rains

According to information from the City Hall Operations Center, the municipality of Rio de Janeiro returned to Stage 2 of alert at 0:45 am this Thursday (04), due to the reduction in rainfall accumulation.

“At this moment, the hydrological risk in the capital, Baixada Fluminense and the Serrana and South regions is high or very high. There is a risk of flooding and flooding in the municipalities of Rio de Janeiro, Nilópolis, Mesquita, São João de Meriti, Teresópolis, Rio Claro and Barra Mansa”, informed the Rio de Janeiro Military Fire Department.

The population is advised to follow their routine, remaining attentive to updates from Alerta Rio, the media and official channels of the Rio Operations Center. It is recommended that you register for the Civil Defense alert service via SMS and download the COR app .River.

The meteorological situation caused impacts in several areas of the city, with events related to rain, such as falling branches on roads and pockets of water. The Rio de Janeiro Fire Department responded to around 40 incidents in the last 24 hours, mainly related to rescuing people and cutting down trees.

The State Civil Defense reported that it remains in contact with city halls, ready to offer support if the municipal response capacity is exceeded.
