“My family’s first and last time at Maracanã”, says witness

“Very scared. Dread! My daughter and other children cried a lot! On the bus we couldn’t leave the place! It was bomb! Punches! Stones! It was my family’s first and last time at Maracanã.”

The desperate report is by journalist Alessandra Ribeiro, who witnessed the violent confrontation between fans around the Maracanã stadium before the derby.

Accompanied by her husband, her 8-year-old daughter and a group of friends, the journalist traveled approximately 280 kilometers from Campos dos Goytacazes to the capital. However, what was supposed to be a festive day turned into moments of panic that traumatized the family.

“Everyone took off their team shirts, running. Traffic stopped. So we walked around the stadium but there was a lot of fighting. Bomb! It started to rain a lot. The police came by car, the cavalry, the angry crowd… we started to run, we lost our friends, we ran to some vehicles and stopped in them with my daughter in tears, my husband nervous, my nephews aged 8 and 19 terrified. It was nerve-racking,” she told CNN .
