Hospitalized, Papa Francisco begins process of reforms in the Catholic Church

Pope Francis approved a new three -year process to consider reforms for the Catholic Church, the Vatican announced on Saturday (15) in a sign that the 88 -year -old pontiff plans to continue in office despite the continuous battle against bilateral pneumonia.

Francisco extended the work of the Synod of Bishops, an initiative to sign his 12 -year -old papacy, which discussed reforms such as the possibility of women serving as a diaconis and a better inclusion of LGBTQia+ people in the church.

The Synod, who held an inconclusive dome of Vatican bishops about the future of the Church last October, will now conduct consultations with Catholics around the world for the next three years, before hosting a new summit in 2028.

Francisco approved the new renovation process on Tuesday (11) of Gemelli Hospital in Rome, where he is hospitalized, reported the Vatican on Saturday (15).

The Pope has been hospitalized for over a month and his prolonged public absence has fueled speculation that he could choose to follow his predecessor Bento XVI and renounce the papacy.

But friends and biographers insisted that he has no plans to resign, and the approval of a new three -year process indicated that he wants to continue, despite the age and the possibility of facing a long and difficult way to recover pneumonia, given age and other medical conditions.

“The Holy Father […] It is helping to boost the renewal of the Church toward a new missionary impulse, ”said Cardinal Mario Grech, the authority of the church that leads the reform process, in the vatican’s means of communication. “This is really a sign of hope.”

The reform of the Catholic Church

After the Vatican’s inconclusive summit last October, which did not produce any concrete action on possible reforms, Francis faced doubts about whether his pontificate was losing strength.

Vatican authorities said at the time that Francisco was still considering future changes and expected to receive a series of ten reports about possible reforms in June.

Vatican’s latest medical newsletters about the Pope’s condition at the hospital reported that he is improving and no longer is running immediate danger of death.

The doctors did not speak when he will be discharged from the hospital.

Supporters have gathered to provide support to Francisco outside the hospital every day during the Pope’s recovery.

Stefania Gianni, an Italian cancer treatment at the unit, commented on Saturday (15) that Francis “took great steps to update the church with the times.”

“He is a great man and a great pope, and the church still needs him,” she added.
