Hotel nights registered the biggest drop in the summer, although prices fell by 13%

The overnight stays (nights) in hotel establishments they fell 78.4% in September compared to the same month of the previous year, due to the outbreaks of late summer, the closure of some hotels that already gave up the season for lost and the restrictions (quarantines) of some European countries. That is only two out of every 10 reservations made last year were billed. That, despite the fact that prices fell 13.4%.

This is reflected in the data published this Friday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE). Hotel nights totaled 8.1 million and they were sustained thanks to the national demand, that of the residents of Spain.

This is the seventh consecutive month of falls for the sector, and the worst month of the whole summer (July, August and September), since in June the drop was 95.1%, but there were still restrictions to mobility between communities due to the state of alarm. In July the decrease was 73.4% and 64.3% in August.

Also keep in mind that the number of hotels open decreased in September in 800 with respect to the month of August (from 13,008 hotels to 12,202). It is 26.8% less than a year ago on the same dates.

National demand

National demand sustained the activity of the sector, with more than 2.8 million resident travelers (45.1% less) compared to almost 600,000 non-residents out of a total of 3.4 million people staying. In the case of foreigners, the drop is 93%.

The French and British concentrated almost 40% of the total nights reserved by foreigners, with falls of 77.7% and 96.4% each compared to the same month of 2019. Germany, Italy and Portugal, the following source markets, also suffered declines of more than 80%.

As for the regions that concentrated most of these reserves, they are Andalusia, Catalonia and the Canary Islands, although they suffered decreases of 70.1%, 80.7% and 83%. In the case of Spanish travelers, the most popular destinations have been Andalusia, Catalonia and the Valencian Community, While in the case of foreign tourists, the Canary Islands accounted for 21.7% of overnight stays (despite a drop of 91.7% compared to September 2019), followed by Catalonia, with 18.3% of the total and a decrease of 93.6%.
