Elegant, modern and refined, the Hotel Telegraphenamt has retained all the characteristics of the telegraph office of the time. In terms of modernity, in fact, it was one of the largest automated postal systems with pneumatic tubes of the time, in all of Europe, becoming a central communication hub. The neo-baroque facadeperfectly restored, has made this building a cultural heritage.

The 97 rooms They have all maintained an industrial look, with barrel-vaulted brick ceilings divided by metal beams and exposed brick walls, but despite this they are very elegant, thanks to the many Art Deco design elementssuch as the room numbers shown on illuminated glass capsules. Every detail has been thought out and chosen to celebrate the history of the building: from the choice of colors to fabrics, from lamps to sofas and furniture.

Room categories range from Cozywith king size bed and a desk, at Roomywider, up to the Maisonettes on two levels, with a bed on the lower level and a sofa and TV on the upper level, floor-to-ceiling windows and a special view of Berlin (with glimpses of the TV Tower and the City Hall). Even larger are the Mabel’s Place, with two bathrooms, a bathtub and a dining table for six, and the Graham’s Residence, with a French balcony and a dining table for eight.

The common areas of the Telegraphenamt are also furnished with the same concept, mixing brick walls, ceilings over 6 meters high and modern, colorful furniture that creates an elegant industrial look.

Inspired by the orangeries of the 18th centurythe Root restaurant is a gigantic space with sphere-shaped lamps hanging from the glass ceiling and floor lamps on the walls that look like street lamps. But the real protagonists are the enormous plants that transform this environment into an urban jungle. There are tables for two with chairs and others with armchairs and sofas. The kitchen of the ROOT – where breakfast is also served for guests – is in the hands of the Chef Roland Mary who is also the manager of the hotel. The chef is known in the city for his famous restaurant, not far from the hotel, Borchardtwhere Leonardo DiCaprio and Barack Obama have also passed through. The menu features dishes from cuisines from many different parts of the world, but the great thing is that they are made with local ingredients as much as possible. The kitchen is open and some tables allow you to see the chef and the team at work. Next door is the ROOT Bar where excellent cocktails are prepared and DJ nights are often organised in the evenings – after all, we are in Berlin.

There is also a Japanese Bakery & Sushi Bar where to eat amazing sushi or where to try traditional Japanese sweets. For those who care about the view and not just what’s on the plate, there is the Café Petit Bijou which overlooks the Spree and the museum district. Guests can also choose to have breakfast here.

Why we like it

For the setting that is a dive into the twenties. For the welcome that one receives in the wonderful hall with an industrial and elegant look at the same time, beyond which there is the space of coworkingfrequented all day by young people studying or working on the computer. For the restoration that has maintained some original details of the timeenhancing them, such as the system of pneumatic tubes visible throughout the hotel. For the gym of almost 13 thousand square meters which is part of the private club, but is also open to hotel guests.
