The next Corpus Christi holiday, which will be on June 16, will bring an occupancy of more than 85% for hotels in the city of Rio de Janeiro, according to the Rio Municipal Accommodation Means Union (HotéisRIO), Jorge Chaves .
According to Jorge Jaber, vice president of the union, even though June is the low season, demand for hotel rooms is higher than expected. He says that the date is significant for the sector, so that this movement can collaborate with the resumption of the hotel chain.
“As this is the first big weekend since Carnival, expectations are very good and are already real. At the moment, the city’s demand is 85% occupancy, and the expectation is to reach 100% in the coming days. The weekend brings a lot of movement in a period of low season, being a very important date for the sector, after scarce periods due to the pandemic”, he points out.
With the improvement of the Covid-19 scenario, Chaves notes a resumption of visitors and similar rates to the period before the pandemic. For him, the date will be positive for the hotel chain and will maintain the recovery that hotels have had since the reduction in cases of Covid-19 at the end of last year.
“The vaccinated population has had mild cases, maintaining their travels and taking advantage of the good times to travel with family and friends. This makes the stability of the hotel segment possible, increasing the hirings necessary for the continuous recovery of the sector, contributing socially and economically to the city”, he says.
The Rio Convention & Visitors Bureau states that the flow of tourists on the holiday reflects the current moment of recovery in the sector. After two years, the company points out that domestic tourism has already reached the levels before 2020 and the return of international travel is heading in the same direction.
However, according to Rio CVB, there are important obstacles for the tourist economy to take off. The entity indicates that the rise in the value of tickets, driven by the increase in demand for travel with the flexibility of health measures and the increase in fuel prices are the main reasons that prevent the growth of this sector. Airfares went up.
Movement in the city of Rio de Janeiro
Tom Jobim International Airport, RIOgaleão, estimates a movement of more than 70 thousand passengers on domestic and international flights between the 15th and 20th of June. Last year, the estimate was 20 thousand passengers for the same period. At the Rodoviária do Rio, more than 207,000 travelers should pass through the Corpus Christi holiday. However, despite having a great deal of movement, the number of trips still does not reach the levels of the pre-pandemic period.
The movement forecast for this year represents 88% of what it was in 2019, on the same holiday.
Statistical data from the concessionaire show that the 41 regular transport companies will provide 6,640 buses to meet demand, with 1,770 extra transports to meet the demand for bus travel.
According to the company, tourists arriving in the city will come mainly from São Paulo, Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo. Many travelers, according to the survey carried out by the bus station, will embark for tourist regions in the State of Rio de Janeiro, such as Lagos, Vale do Café, Friburgo, Teresópolis and other nearby mountain towns.
