Hours before the accident, a family was mistakenly on a plane that crashed in SP for 30 minutes

A family mistakenly boarded the Voepass plane which, hours later, crashed in Vinhedo (SP) on Friday (9), killing 62 people.

A 31-year-old man, who preferred not to be identified, reported to CNN that he, his wife and his 1-year-old son boarded the aircraft in Guarulhos, when they were heading to Cascavel (PR).

This was the last stretch flown by the plane before the trip that would end in the accident in Vinhedo. The ATR 72-500 with registration PS-VPB landed in Cascavel at around 11:18 am and, almost 40 minutes later, took off again and was going to return to Guarulhos, but crashed in the interior of São Paulo.

The family remained inside the plane for about 30 minutes until they realized the mistake. The man said he had been with the flight attendants who would later lose their lives in the accident.

The young man said that if he had taken the flight from Guarulhos to Cascavel, he would have had to return to Guarulhos on the same plane and would possibly have been among the victims of the accident. “That’s what would have happened if I hadn’t heard one of the passengers say that the flight was going to Cascavel.”

His correct destination was Rio Verde, in Goiás, and the mistake happened because, according to him, the two flights were close together and boarding was taking place at the same time.

Weather conditions are among the hypotheses for the crash of the plane, which plummeted 4,000 meters in one minute. Images taken by residents of Vinhedo show the aircraft falling in a “flat spin”, which indicate that the accident occurred due to loss of lift.
