House approves urgent bill banning Bible editing or adaptation

The plenary of the Chamber of Deputies approved this Wednesday (4) the urgency of a bill that prohibits any alteration, edition or addition to the texts of the Bible.

The text was presented by federal deputy Sergeant Isidório (Avante-BA) in August 2019. He is known for carrying a Bible or plaque with political demonstrations in his hands by Parliament.

The project has only one main paragraph. The text says that “any alteration, edition or addition to the texts of the Holy Bible, composed of the Old and New Testaments in their chapters or verses, is prohibited, and the preaching of its content throughout the national territory is guaranteed”.

In the justification of the project, Sergeant Isidório says that any change in the wording of the Bible can constitute religious intolerance and even a “great offense for most Brazilians, regardless of their religion”.

“Therefore, our legitimate concern is to overturn this sacred text through the Federal Parliament, guaranteeing once and for all the inviolability of its wording and its public explanation in Brazil”, complements the text.

He cites the different number of books, chapters and verses between the Evangelical Bible and the Catholic Bible, but argues that “it can be said, without fear of error, that everyone believes in the existence of a Sovereign God”.

In all, 17 deputies signed the request in support of the urgency in the process of the project. Most are formed by party leaders, including Avante, PL, PCdoB, PSC, PSD and PSDB.
