“House of the Dragon”: frontal nude scene was actor’s decision, says director

The third episode of the second season of “The House of the Dragon” aired on Sunday (30) and brought back one of the characteristics that marked “Game of Thrones” : The uncensored nudity of characters .

In the last episode, a scene with frontal nudity of Aemond Targaryen, played by Ewan Mitchell surprised fans of the series, which until then had been a little more restrained than its predecessor in this regard.

“Ewan is a great actor. He understands what he needs to do to play Aemond,” season two director Geeta Vasant Patel told Variety.

“When I originally approached him about the nudity, I told him, ‘Let’s just go through the motions. If you’re not comfortable being naked, then you’re not going to be naked.’ We were both on the same page about it,” Patel explained.

“He guided me through his character. One thing about directing is that it’s really important to surrender to the actors, and for the actors to surrender. It’s a mutual surrender,” she said. “In this case, Ewan knew his character so well that I was listening and walking with him as we went through each episode leading up to this one.”

“The conclusion we came to is that Aemond was hurt. He was bullied when he was little. Since he was hurt, he has created this persona that is the exact opposite of how he was feeling. He has created this persona of someone who is insensitive and doesn’t care what other people think of him,” Patel said.

According to her, the purpose of the scene in the brothel in which Aemond appears naked was to show the exact moment in which the character stops showing his vulnerability and decides to “put on his armor” to act as if he were insensitive.

“When he stands up, the fact that he doesn’t care that you see his penis is such a strong visceral shift. And then, of course, Ewan was like, ‘I want to be totally naked in this moment. It’s important to me because that’s what my character would be like. That’s what he would do.’ And that’s what we did,” the director added.
