The second season of “House of the Dragon” spin-off of “Game of Thrones”, arrives on streaming (Max) and TV (HBO) this Sunday (16). The first season, which premiered in 2022, deepened the Targaryen dynasty in a story that takes place 180 years before the battle between the Seven Kingdoms.

The new episodes promise to follow the beginning of a possible civil war between the Targaryens. The conflict takes place between House Velaryon, possessing the largest navy in Westeros and more than a dozen dragons, and the rise of King Aegon II.

Intrigue and many twists marked the episodes released in 2022. Below, the CNN recalls the events of the first season before the new story arrives. Remember!

Warning: the following article may contain spoilers.

In the first season, the plot refers to the reign of Viserys I (Paddy Considine), 130 years after Aegon conquered Westeros. On the Iron Throne, which he shared with Aemma Targaryen, he had only one daughter: Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy). After many attempts to have a son, the king remarries Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke), now his new wife, who was, in fact, his daughter’s friend when they were both pre-teens.

The two separated when Alicent married her father. Since then, the two have had a “competition”, which spread when they both had children. It is worth mentioning that the Targaryens were known as the Lords of Dragons and married and reproduced only among themselves.

Rhaenyra, in turn, was married to Laenor Velaryon (John MacMillan), who ended up having a “faked” death to escape with her lover. After that, Rhaenyra married her uncle, Daemon (Matt Smith).

Rhaenyra had sons Jacaerys, Lucerys, Viserys II, Aegon III and Joffrey. Alicent had, with Viserys I, three children, including the firstborn Aegon II Targaryen, Aemond and Helaena.

With the death of Viserys I, Aegon II is immediately crowned king by the Hightowers – father and daughter, Sir Otto Hightower and Lady Alicent. Rhaenyra, named heir to the throne by her father, is shocked by her brother’s coronation, which causes her to go into premature labor and give birth to a stillborn child. Meanwhile, Daemon, her current husband, gathers a council to create a strategy for the impending war.

At the end of the season, Rhaenyra sends her children with their dragons to announce her coronation and gather potential allies. While Jacaerys goes north, Lucerys goes south to visit Lord Baratheon at Storm’s End. However, when she arrives, she realizes that Aemond is already there with Vaghar, a dragon he “stole” from Laena Velaryon, Daemon’s ex-wife who killed herself after failing to give birth.

Laena’s daughters, Baela and Rhaena, upset by what had happened, fought with Aemond, as Vhagar would be the inheritance of one of them. He then attacks the girls, which leads to a general fight between him and his nephews Lucerys and Jacaerys.

In the end, at Storm’s End, Lucerys is rejected as an ally and, when he tries to leave, Aemond surprises him in the skies with Vaghar. A fight between the dragons ends with the death of Prince Lucerys and Arrax, his dragon, both devoured by Vaghar.

The first season ends with Rhaenyra receiving the news at Dragonstone, an ancient Valyrian fortress on the coast of Westeros.

It is worth highlighting that the The third season of “House of the Dragon” has already been renewed.
