“House of the Dragon”: Who are the two new dragon riders?

Spoiler alert: the following text contains spoilers for the 7th episode of the 2nd season of “House of the Dragon”.

The seventh episode of “The House of the Dragon” introduced two more dragon riders: the bastards Hugh Hammer It is Ulf the White formed a connection with the wild dragons Vermithor It is Silverwing (or Asaprata, in the Portuguese translation).

The plan of Rhaenyra Targaryen The idea of recruiting new dragon riders to gain an advantage in the war between the Blacks and the Greens had already been discussed in previous episodes, but it was in this one that the queen decided to expand her search beyond the nobility of Westeros and give her family’s bastards a chance — with the strategy that became known as the Seeding .

The attempt resulted in a bloodbath, with most of the dragonseeds (as Valyrian-blooded bastards are called) being devoured or burned by Vermithor.

However, not one but two bastards succeeded, earning the trust of Vermithor and Silverwing and becoming dragonriders themselves—just like Addam of the Hoof in episode six.

Who are the new dragon riders in “House of the Dragon”?

Hugh Hammer, the new knight of Vermithor

Hugh (Kieran Brew) has appeared a few times throughout the series. The blacksmith has difficulty supporting his poor family, and suffered from the crisis in King’s Landing after the start of the civil war between the Targaryens.

He even asked for help from the then King Aegon Targaryen earlier this season (and didn’t receive it), and tried to leave King’s Landing to seek a better life for his daughter, who was sick, but was stopped by the current King Aemond Targaryen, who closed the borders. The death of his daughter was a deciding factor in him applying to try to ride a dragon.

In this episode, Hugh revealed that he was the son of a bastard of the Targaryen family, half-sister of Baelon Targaryen, who prostituted herself in Westeros, which makes him a cousin of Viserys and Daemon.

Faced with the death of so many candidates, Hugh decides to face Vermithor head on, ready to accept his own death, but ends up being successful and gaining the dragon’s trust.

Ulf the White, Silverwing’s new rider

Ulf the White (Tom Bennett), has also appeared before in “House of the Dragon”, usually drinking in some pub while bragging about having Targaryen blood in his veins.

His supposed ancestry has already earned him several free mugs of drink, which is why Ulf is pressured by his friends to apply to be a dragon rider (and, in a way, prove his lineage).

According to Ulf, he would be a bastard of Baelon Targaryen, which would make him half-brother to Viserys and Daemon.

In the series, Ulf tries to escape the flames of Vermithor and begins to walk through the dragon pit, until he accidentally encounters Silverwing, and ends up stepping on a nest with its eggs. When the dragon notices his presence, he believes he will be killed, but ends up creating a connection with the creature.
