Household consumption in 2022 is up 2.50% until April, says association

The National Consumption Index of Brazilian Homes of the Brazilian Association of Supermarkets (Abras) accumulates a high of 2.50% from January to April, in line with the supermarket sector’s estimates of a growth of 2.80% in the year. In April, the indicator registered a high of 4.20% compared to March.

In comparison with the same month of 2021, the index increased by 7.37%, according to the monitoring of the Department of Economics and Research at Abras.

The indicators are deflated by the Broad National Consumer Price Index (IPCA), measured by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

“The increase in formal employment in the four-month period, as well as the resources injected into the economy, such as the extraordinary withdrawal of the Guarantee Fund, the maintenance of Auxílio Brasil and the anticipation of the 13th salary are sustaining consumption in homes in the face of a scenario of high and persistent inflation that directly impacts the food basket”, explains the vice president of Abras, Marcio Milan.

Abrasmercado (a basket of 35 consumer products such as food, beverages, meats, cleaning products, hygiene and beauty items) – registered a 3.04% increase in April and the average price of the national basket rose from R$ 736, 34 in March to R$758.72 in April.

In the year through April, the increase is 8.31% and in the 12-month period it reaches 17.87%. Basic items of the food basket accumulate a significant increase in the four-month period, such as soybean oil (20.38%), long-life milk (22.35%), beans (19.71%), wheat flour (15.45%) , roasted and ground coffee (13.22%).
