The Houthis attacked a grain ship in the Red Sea with “naval missiles,” according to a spokesperson. The “Star Iris” is a vessel from the United States, the member of the Yemeni group said in a statement on X.
Maritime tracking sites showed a Marshall Islands-flagged ship of the same name in the Red Sea.
The UK Maritime Trade Operations Organization (UKMTO) said a ship was attacked by two missiles 40 nautical miles south of Al Mukha, Yemen. The ship reported minor damage and the crew is safe.
It is unclear whether the two statements are related to the same incident.
The US and UK have targeted Houthi assets in Yemen in response to the group's attacks on ships traveling through the Red Sea.
The Iran-backed group said attacks would continue on Israel-aligned ships until “aggression ceases” in Gaza.
“The Yemeni Armed Forces, in response to their religious, moral and humanitarian duty, will continue to implement the decision to impede Israeli navigation or those heading to the ports of occupied Palestine in the Red and Arabian Seas until the aggression ceases and the siege on the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip be lifted,” said the group’s self-proclaimed military spokesman, Yahya Saree, in a statement on X.
