The Houthi movement held military exercises on Saturday (13) in Saada province, in northwest Yemen, threatening a “strong and effective response” after the United States carried out another night attack against the Iran-aligned group.
In a video released by the Houthis, officers were filmed watching a series of military exercises, including mortar launches and military maneuvers.
The attacks have raised concerns about the escalation of conflict that has spread across the region since Palestinian group Hamas and Israel went to war, with Iran's allies also joining the fray from Lebanon, Syria and Iraq. The latest attack, which the US said hit a radar site, came a day after dozens of American and British attacks on Houthi facilities in Yemen.
“This new attack will have a firm, strong and effective response,” Houthi spokesperson Nasruldeen Amer told Al Jazeera, adding that there were no injuries or “material damage”.
Mohammed Abdulsalam, another Houthi spokesman, told Reuters that the attacks, including the one that hit a military base in Sanaa overnight, had not had a significant impact on the group's ability to prevent Israeli-affiliated ships from passing through the Red Sea and the Arabian Sea.
The Pentagon said on Friday (12) that the US-UK strikes had “good effects”.
The Houthis say their maritime campaign aims to support Palestinians under siege and Israeli attack in Gaza, which is governed by Iran-backed Hamas. Many of the ships attacked had no known connection to Israel.
The group, which controls Sanaa and much of western and northern Yemen, has also fired drones and missiles across the Red Sea at Israel.
