Iran’s diplomatic mission to the United Nations may have announced tonight that Yemen’s Houthis have agreed to a temporary ceasefire to allow tugs and rescue ships to reach the Sounion tanker, but that is not the case. The Houthis did not agree to a “temporary truce”, except to allow the Greek-flagged tanker Sounion to be towed, their spokesman Mohamed Abdulsalam told the Reuters news agency this evening. The clarifying statement came after Iran’s diplomatic mission to the United Nations announced that Yemen’s Houthis had agreed to a “temporary ceasefire”. The Sounion was the third Athens-based Delta Tankers ship to come under attack this month in the Red Sea. The 25-member crew left the tanker with the assistance of the EU maritime mission “Shields”.
