All ships heading to Israeli ports will be targeted by Yemen's Houthis, supported by Iran, and not just in the Red Sea region, said Abdulmalik al-Houthi, the group's leader, in a televised speech this Thursday (16).
The group has threatened to extend its attacks on ships heading from Israeli ports to the Mediterranean Sea, in what it says is a campaign of solidarity with Palestinians during Israel's war against Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
Al-Houthi called on China, Russia, as well as Asian and European countries not to transport goods to Israeli ports.
The Houthis have previously said their main targets are Israel and its allies the United States and Britain.
“Everyone must stop shipping to the occupied Palestinian ports… It is in the interest of all companies to stop shipping to the Israeli enemy towards the Mediterranean Sea or in any direction,” al-Houthi said.
The Houthi attacks have increased the cost of shipping and insurance by disrupting a key trade route between Asia and Europe, forcing shipping companies to reroute their voyages to longer and more expensive routes around the African continent.
