How a single dose of Pfizer and AstraZeneca protects against hospitalization with covid: a report from the UK

Pfizer-BioNTech and Oxford-AstraZeneca anti-coronavirus vaccines have shown roughly the same effectiveness in protecting the oldest people from COVID-19 a few weeks after a single dose. This is the conclusion reached by British researchers, their report was published in the journal The BMJ.

The report included data on 156,930 vaccinated participants ≥70 years old who reported symptoms of COVID-19 from December 8, 2020 to February 19, 2021.

28-34 days after the injection with “pfizer”, the effectiveness of protection reached 61% and stabilized at this level (two weeks after the second dose, the figure was 89%).

In 28-34 days after the injection with “astrazeneca”, the effectiveness of protection reached 60%, increasing further to 73%. There are no data on effect after the second dose in this study yet.

In addition to protecting against covid symptoms, the risk of hospitalization was reduced by 43% among those vaccinated with a single dose of Pfizer-BioNTech, and by 37% among those who received Oxford-AstraZeneca.

“Combined with its effect against symptoms, a single dose of any of these vaccines was approximately 80% effective in preventing hospitalization with COVID-19. Protection was maintained during the follow-up period (> 6 weeks),” the authors summarized.
