More than a third of respondents, 35% more specifically, do not have a specific destination in mind when planning their trip. 42% even stated that there is flexibility as to where and when he will travel this year. These are some of the results of a survey conducted by Skyscanner and One Poll on more than 1,000 Germans in April.
As the study showed, most German travelers use the “Alle Orte” (“all places”) option on Skyscanner.de instead of a specific destination, comparing available flights and travel deals.
It is noted that the German market is the largest reservoir of visitors for Greek tourism.
They want all the booking options
The desire to have all the options for the next vacation is obvious. For 51% of participants, price is also one of the most important factors before making a final holiday decision.
“In recent years, we have seen a shift in demand towards spontaneous bookings and last minute bookings,” says Naomi Hahn, travel expert at Skyscanner. “The impact of the pandemic has further accelerated this shift, making flexible travel the new travel rule.”
Lesser known destinations are becoming more popular
In 2021, the search engine saw some lesser-known destinations gain popularity, as countries without travel restrictions were particularly in focus, Hahn said, and estimated that this trend would continue.
Among the destinations that gained popularity was Rhodes compared to March 2019. Other places were Mexico City, Paphos, Izmir and Zagreb.
International travel is important
In the current survey, 61% of German respondents said they now attach more importance to travel abroad than before the pandemic. In addition, 88% of German holidaymakers are more optimistic that they will make a trip during the year. Figures at Skyscanner show that in April booking flights in June, July and August increased by 68% compared to the previous month.
It is recalled that through Condor Airlines there are six flights a week, in total, which directly connect Athens with Düsseldorf and Leipzig. Two days ago, a meeting was held between the Minister of Tourism Vassilis Kikilias and the sales director of Condor Airlines Paul Schwaiger.
As it was pointed out at the meeting, our country is in the top destinations for German tourists, with the first data from the two largest tour operators -TUI and DER Touristik- even talking about doubling the bookings in many Greek destinations, at least until November.
