How Halki becomes the first island of green economy

By Dimitris Gatsios

The Prime Minister is going to Halki today at noon, proposing the green agenda of the government, following the initiatives announced at the United Nations Conference on Climate Change, but also the reforms on the environment, as they were on the front line of yesterday’s cabinet. .

After Astypalea, Halki becomes the first island of green economy, within the GR-eco islands program. A program that aims to transform our islands into models of green economy, energy autonomy, digital innovation and ecological mobility. This initiative includes actions such as the increased use of Renewable Energy Sources, the promotion of energy efficiency, the sustainable management of waste and water, the electrification of transport, the green transformation of agriculture and tourism and the development of port and other infrastructure. , through targeted interventions and customized programs under the “umbrella” of the National Plan for Energy and Climate, with Kyriakos Mitsotakis, at yesterday’s cabinet meeting, pointing out that the global energy environment, in addition to a development challenge, is becoming a field of the geostrategic and international position of the country. In Halki, according to the design of the program, a photovoltaic system will be installed, which will produce green energy capable of meeting the demand of the island’s inhabitants. With the start of operation of the project, as noted by government officials, the annual savings in the electricity bills of the municipality and the residents will amount to 180,000-250,000 euros. Alongside:

– Emissions savings of approximately 1,800 tons of CO2 will be achieved.

-Residents will have access to the 5G network, which will facilitate their daily lives in the field of digital services.

At the center of yesterday’s cabinet and with a view to the environment, four reforms were presented. The climate law, which the country acquires for the first time. The new framework for the production and storage of electricity from clean sources, with an emphasis on offshore wind farms. The transformation of the Hydrocarbon Management Authority. The national plan of circular economy for the four years 2021-2025. “We are a pioneer in the investments of renewable energy sources but also in electricity, but at the same time – and I want to emphasize this – we are also becoming a hub for the transfer of clean energy in the Mediterranean. The recent agreement with Egypt on the electricity interconnection, through which clean electricity will be transferred from the African sun to Greece and from there to Europe, is indicative, but Greece’s position as an energy hub concerns not only the present but also the future. “In the discussions we had, for example, with Saudi Arabia, Greece can become a hub for the entry of green hydrogen that will be produced in the Middle East and will be introduced to the European market through Greece”, noted Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
