The app-based transport company 99 launched this Tuesday (14) 99Moto, a method of transporting passengers by motorcyclists, in the city of São Paulo.
This category was launched despite the decree of January 7, 2023, by Mayor Ricardo Nunes (MDB), which temporarily suspended, without a specific deadline, the app-based travel service on two-wheeled vehicles.
Amid criticism from the mayor of the launch, this Wednesday (15), the São Paulo Court of Justice (TJSP) denied a request for protection from the company and reinforced the suspension of the service. 99 continues to provide motorcycle travel and also announced that it will not interrupt the service.
The company operates with the modality in around 3,300 cities, in addition to the capital of São Paulo. Understand how motorcycle trips work :
São Paulo center out of operation
Just like car races, motorcycle trips can be requested by users through the 99 app at any time of the day in the capital of São Paulo. The exception is trips with departure and destination in the areas around the historic center, called the expanded Center of São Paulo.
In an interview with CNN Bruno Rossini, communications director at 99, explains that, in this first phase of launching the modality, the company is still analyzing how the platform adapts to São Paulo’s traffic.
The “motorbike” mode only appears as an option for users for races that do not have embargoes and destinations in the expanded Center of São Paulo. Otherwise, just select the option and wait for the driver to arrive.
Mandatory helmet
In the 99Moto service, it is mandatory for the passenger to wear a helmet, either the user’s own or the one provided by the motorcyclist.
99 informs that, in case of refusal to wear a helmet, motorcyclists can cancel the trip without being penalized.
The company also provides guidance on what passengers should not do.
- Distract the driver
- Suggest actions contrary to traffic laws, such as going the wrong way or crossing at a red light
- Hurry up the driver so that the trip ends faster.
The company’s communications director reinforced that partner drivers are advised to follow traffic laws and that supervision is the responsibility of the competent authorities.
