The upcoming sixth season of The Crown recounts true events that occurred within the British royal family from 1997, the year of the tragic death of Princess Diana in a car accident in Paris, to 2005, when the wedding of Prince Charles to Camilla was celebrated. And although the queen disappeared last September, well beyond the designated timeline of the series, the author and screenwriter Peter Morgan stated that in the final episode of The Crown homage will be paid to the sovereign’s legacy.
When the monarch’s very long reign came to an end following her passing at the age of 96, production on the final season of the Netflix series halted as a mark of respect. «The Crown it’s a love letter to him and for now I have nothing to add, just silence and respect”Morgan wrote in a statement released at the time to Deadline. “Just out of respect, I expect we will stop filming.”
In a recent interview with Variety, Morgan said the short hiatus offered a chance to address the character’s death in the series. “We’ve all had the funeral experience,” she said. “So, because they will all have experienced it deeply, I had to try to find a way to deal with the character’s death in the final episode, even if the queen wasn’t gone yet.”
The head of Netflix, Ted Sarandos, added that although there was discussion of ending the series with the Queen’s death, in the end it was decided to stick to the expected end point of 2005. “It was the deadline to keep it historical rather than journalistic,” he explained . “I think stopping almost 20 years before the present day is dignified.”
Despite the doubts of the Prince Williamof the Prince Harry and even of Judi Dench, Morgan thinks he still has the right to talk about the royal family while addressing delicate facts that actually happened. “In Britain, whether they recognize it or not, everyone has a certain degree of sensitivity and attachment to this family, and that’s why it’s an absolute minefield for writers to explore,” he said. «Yet screenwriters were born to write about kings and queens. It’s what we do.”
The sixth season of the series will be released in two parts later this year: the first on November 16 and the second on December 14.
