How swing state voters reacted to the Biden-Trump debate

Larry Malinconico went to bed worried about President Joe Biden’s performance in the debate on Thursday night (29). He woke up thinking he should do something about it.

Malinconico is a freelance professor and college geology professor in Northampton County, Pennsylvania, a hotbed of one of the nation’s most competitive presidential battlegrounds.

“I am extremely concerned,” Malinconico said shortly after the debate. CNN . “President Biden performed poorly. His voice was weak. He stumbled and had difficulty maintaining control of his answers.”

Still, he can’t imagine the alternative and ended his evening debate with this: “Despite my significant concerns about Biden’s capabilities, I will still vote against Trump.”

But early Friday afternoon (29), Malinconico got in touch to add the following: “After thinking about the debate overnight… I am now much more in favor of supporting measures for President Biden to step down or for a open (perhaps brokered) convention.”

Malinconico is participating in a project of CNN to follow the 2024 campaign through the eyes and experiences of voters who live in battlegrounds and are part of critical voting blocs.

There are 60 participating voters so far, across 10 states, and they are diverse in every way. But the overwhelming consensus after the debate, from both Democrats and Republicans, was that Biden’s performance was alarming.

And while Trump’s staunch supporters were pleased with his performance, the former president also faced harsh criticism from many voters, including Republicans.

“Same old Donald, talking about himself,” said Matt Vrahiotes, a conservative Christian who owns a small winery in Hall County, Georgia. “It stroked his ego.”
