How the Greeks bet on the internet in 2021

By Matina Harkoftaki

Online gambling has been running at a high pace in recent years, which is among the fastest growing gambling industries with Greece appearing ready to seize the opportunity, as it expects up to 1 billion euros in gross gambling revenue over a 2-year horizon. .

The upward trends are also reflected in the numbers as according to the data of the National Gaming Control Committee, the revenues that came from the online games in 2021 showed an increase of 43.71% on the total turnover (TGR) and 22.80% on the gross revenue (GGR) compared to the previous year. In addition, online gambling accounts for 77.5% of the total turnover while the land division holds a share of 22.45%. In terms of subcategories, Fixed Odds Betting, which includes the pregame betting, in play betting and virtual betting subcategories, accounted for 33.76% of total turnover (TGR) compared to of 66.24% held by the category of other online games (Other Online Games), which includes the subcategories live casino, poker, and slots while in terms of gross revenue their percentage rose to 55.3% compared to 44.7 which came from the category of other games.

The monthly turnover

Of particular interest is the monthly turnover during the last year with the participation in online gaming remaining at a relatively high level in the months of September to May compared to the summer months which records a larger decline. This is due to the fact that fewer betting events take place during the summer months as the major European football and basketball leagues have been completed, sports that have traditionally attracted the most betting interest.

However, last year was an exception in June, the month of the European football championship, an important sporting event, which kept the appetite of Greeks for online betting at high levels. Based on the monthly development, larger deviations are observed in the gross income (GGR) from the bet as they gradually decrease during the months of January to May, which is partly due to the progressively increasing ability of the players to successfully predict the outcome of the offered bets. markets, as during this period the participating teams in the major football and basketball events have now stabilized their performance.

Requests for new licenses

Our country is quite high in the choices of companies operating in this market, which is evident in the fact that since the summer of 2021, EEEP continues to accept applications from providers seeking a license to conduct online games. However, before the committee gives its approval, a thorough audit must have been carried out in relation to the operation and financial results of the companies, and in case the conditions are not met, then the request is rejected.

As capital.gr reported in an earlier post about a month ago, Brobet Limited, one of the largest sports betting and casino companies in Bulgaria, and Elladix Limited, which so far has not shown any activity.

At this stage, the specific requests are being evaluated by the competent management of the EEEP, as defined by the procedure. So, if they meet the conditions and receive the “green” light from the EEEP, it is not excluded that in the near future they will be launched in the Greek market, expanding the options that will now be available to users on the internet. Note that the Type 1 license refers to a sports betting authorization while the Type 2 license allows the provider to host and conduct online casino games.
