The best way to prepare for any battle is to know your enemy. In the podcast The Science of Beauty of the American magazine Allure An entire episode was dedicated to one of hair’s most feared adversaries: frizz.
First of all what it is: «The most external structure [del capello] it is called the cuticular layer; it spreads like tiles, ”explains cosmetic chemist Erica Douglas. When the cuticle layer is flat, the hair appears smooth and shiny. When those metaphorical shingles rise and fall out of alignment, however, the aesthetic result is what we know as frizz.
But what causes the cuticle layer to become misaligned? And how can you convince those tiles to – as Beyoncé would say – put them in formation? Douglas answers these questions (and more!) Throughout the episode, but here are three helpful tips.
The more well-hydrated your hair is, the less likely it is to frizz
Hair can only hold a certain amount of water, Douglas says. So if you load your hair with hydration when wet, the strands are less likely to absorb moisture (aka moisture) from the environment, which causes – you guessed it – frizz.
Regular trims can help with frizz
“Split ends need to be taken care of as soon as possible,” says Douglas, noting that split ends can move up the entire length of the hair. This can lead to a misalignment of the cuticle layer, which causes frizz.
A silk pillowcase can be worth the investment
Many pillowcases are made of absorbent cotton, which, “when you sleep, [ruba] silently the moisture that’s in the hair, ”says Douglas. But silk isn’t that porous – meaning interrupting this step can help retain moisture and fight frizz, according to Douglas.
Some products with an anti-frizz effect to be used in your hair routine.
Frizz Control Smoothing Shampoo La Biosthetique tames unruly hair already during washing, nourishes it with sweet almond oil and binds the hydration inside the hair helping to keep it under control, while the positively charged cellulose bonds restore its balance of the structure. Even the most indomitable hair is beautiful, soft, protected from external agents and shiny as silk. Cost: 250 ml € 22
