How to remap keys in Windows 10 and 11: 3 ways

There may be several reasons for remapping keys on a laptop or PC – they may simply not work, which complicates some processes, or the user wants to simplify his life in certain scenarios. Fortunately, the process of reconfiguring the keyboard is quite simple and does not require any special skills or experience – just download the software, follow the instructions and get the most out of the input tool.

Remapping keys in MapKeyboard

The program is very simple, understandable and, importantly, free, plus there is support for even older versions of operating systems. It is enough to download the software, install and open. Further, the reassignment of keys occurs in three clicks:

1. click with the mouse on the virtual keyboard key that you want to reassign;

2. in the lower left corner, click on the drop-down box and select the button option that you want to assign to this key;
   

3. click the Save layout button to save the settings;
   

4. the software will offer to reboot the system – agree.

After restarting the operating system, the key will be reassigned.

Remapping keys in SharpKeys

SharpKeys has a slightly wider range of functions, which will be extremely useful if you plan to remap not one, but several keys at once. The fact is that all of them will be displayed in the main menu, which is extremely convenient – you will not forget which buttons are configured for what. At the same time, the process of remapping keys is also very simple:

1. click on Add in the lower left corner;
   

2. in the window that opens, there are keys on the left, and on the right – buttons to which they can be reassigned (you can not search through the list, but click on the Type Key and activate the desired key);
   

3. save the changes and in the main menu click on Write to Registry;
4. reboot the system.

In the main menu, you can quickly delete remapped keys one at a time or all at once.

Remapping keys in KeyTweak

KeyTweak developers allow not only reassigning keys, but also assigning certain actions to them – from multimedia to, for example, a quick transition to Sleep mode. This is done pretty quickly:

1. on the virtual keyboard, click on the key you want to remap;
   

2. in the Choose New Remapping drop-down list, select the button you want to activate;
   

3. click on the Remap Key and Apply button;
4. reboot the system.

On the right in the application, special keys are displayed, which can also be configured and reassigned, plus there is a list with all reassigned keys (they can be deleted and edited). If necessary, all settings can be reset to the “Default” state.
