How to train every day with running

Schematic, controlled and gradual training. This is the winning formula to start training and not give up. Even beginners, Sunday runners or half-hour runners on a lunch break, can set up a professional method to achieve their goals.

«Running creates a positive addiction. It makes you feel strong, while you run you feel capable of anything, autonomous, you feel invincible ». To say it is Max Monteforte, runner with 122,000 kilometers of running behind him, national coach and former ultramarathon blue, author of the book The art of training, published by Purosangue Edizioni. In 2011 he founded Purosangue Athletics Club, whose foundation also supports solidarity projects such as Shoes Sharing which in 5 years has allowed the collection of over 21 thousand pairs of used running shoes, but still usable, to give the dream of running to many African children.

«When you choose to embark on a business, first of all you have to seek and find in ourselves the strength to overcome any initial fears, perhaps dictated by laziness, the fear of not succeeding, or lack of confidence in our means. Then, along the journey, fatigue will accompany us, but that can be learned to manage ».

Max’s method is schematic because “what cannot be measured cannot be improved ». «It is necessary to plan, periodize and program the personal goal, passing through the management of fatigue and rest», explains.

Each goal, each improvement as well as the fatigue itself take the form of a data to be noted in a real diary of the runner. He created an open source one that everyone can download and customize with their business. When you start running, nothing is left to chance.

HOW TO START RUNNING: THE INNER JOURNEY

For Max, running like this to do is useless or better, it is short-lived. When you start you need to be clear about what the goal is, what the direction to take and, above all, knowing in a conscious way why you want to run. «The time devoted to observing ourselves and discovering our emotions is always well spent, I call it inner journey. When we know exactly the direction to follow, we move faster and more determined, without wasting our energies and with a perfectly focused mind.

EARLY MORNING IS BETTER (AND IN A GROUP)

Running feeds reflections and stimulates thinking, running is an act of freedom and predisposes us to maintain a positive attitude towards everyday life. If you can, run early in the morning, before any other activity. «This effort will allow you not to be forced to put your head back in the race for the rest of the day, it will free you from the thought of not being able to dedicate yourself to an activity that makes you happy in the course of your day. In this way, no unforeseen or work or family commitment will prevent you from running if you run early in the morning ».

HOW TO MANAGE FATIGUE

Max Monteforte’s method also involves quantifying fatigue because it is through the numbers written in black and white that we learn to manage it in a conscious way, it is through a scale of values that quantifies the level of fatigue that we can overcome ourselves. «Fatigue is the training companion of all runners, from the champion who plays for a place on the podium at the Olympics to the neophyte who takes his first running steps in the park near his home. Only by learning to manage mental fatigue can you learn to overcome physical fatigue too: it is the brain that sends the signal: “I can’t take it anymore”, even before the muscles are really exhausted ».

HOW TO OVERCOME THE FEARS OF THE RUNNER

“Many people are afraid to start running because they are not in control of what can happen,” says Max who for his runners registered on the platform Thoroughbred Training has drawn up mini motivational guides to support them at the beginning of the path. «We can all be top runners based on where we start. Overcoming fears allows you to go beyond your limits, to overcome yourself, to increase expectations and this mental process unites those who run to keep fit and with those who do it at a competitive level ».
