At least one million refugees have left Ukraine since the start of the Russian invasion on February 24, according to the United Nations (UN). Follow the special coverage of CNN.
In this Thursday’s edition (2) of the Medical Correspondentfrom Novo Dia, neurosurgeon Fernando Gomes explained how the feeling of insecurity and the need to leave one’s home negatively impacts the development of children and adolescents.
“The sense of belonging is essential for us to be able to express what we have inside our hearts and brains. […] When you say goodbye to your home or your home without the certainty or security that you will return to life as before, the brain enters a really delicate process of crisis”, he says.
The main destinations for refugees are countries such as Poland, Hungary, Moldova, Slovakia and Romania. Some 7.5 million children are at risk from the conflict.
“Children learn a lot through what we call a mirror neuron, observing the behavior of the parent, how he is reacting emotionally, what steps will be taken, often, this ends up having a definitive impact on the lives of these children. children,” he said.
According to Gomes, the reception of refugees is now essential as a strategy to reduce the potential damage to the training of young people and children, including the provision of drinking water, hygiene materials, medicines and the provision of mobile clinics aimed at psychological support.
