In Brazil, the government’s political isolation led to a shortage of vaccines, with the delay in the delivery of supplies from India and China. Brazil was also in the crosshairs of criticism from international leaders for the increase in deforestation in the Amazon. COP26, the UN Climate Conference, was held after new numbers from the United Nations panel of researchers indicated the need for drastic changes in climate policies.

Germany saw the end of the Merkel era, and changes in command also changed the configuration of political forces in Italy, Ecuador, Peru and Chile. The Castro family left the regime’s top job in Cuba for the first time since 1959. The year was also one of military coup in Myanmar, institutional coup in Tunisia, persecution of journalists in Belarus and a new conflict between Israel and Palestine.

Also in the Middle East, the US presence in Afghanistan came to an end. On the internet, hacker attacks have attracted attention. All these facts illustrate the scale of the different themes of this 2021 international retrospective.
