HP acquires HyperX

HP announced that it has signed an agreement to acquire HyperX, the gaming arm of Kingston Technology. As stated in the related press release, “the acquisition supports HP’s strategy to drive growth in the personal systems business, where games and peripherals are attractive segments.” As a reminder, HyperX manufactures a wide range of gaming peripherals including headsets, keyboards, mice and USB microphones, as well as mouse pads and console accessories.

Computer games are a popular leisure activity. The market for related computing equipment is expected to reach $ 70 billion by 2023, and peripheral device sales in 2024 will be $ 12.2 billion. Most of the latter amount goes to gaming peripherals.

HP is already active in the gaming systems market, in particular offering products under the OMEN brand. The addition of HyperX products to the HP Gaming Ecosystem is expected to “provide innovative opportunities for everything gamers see, hear and feel.”

The transaction amount is $ 425 million. HP will go for everything related to HyperX gaming peripherals, while Kingston will keep DRAM, SSD and other flash-based products for gamers and enthusiasts. The deal is expected to close in the second quarter of 2021. Of course, you first need to get regulatory approval and other conditions common in such cases.
