HP donates computers to Ukrainian children and healthcare workers

The First Lady of Ukraine, Olena Zelenska, met with representatives from HP Inc. and the Global Business Coalition for Education, at the Ukraine House cultural center in Washington, DC, to accept the company’s donation of technology and educational materials aimed at supporting thousands of students, teachers and health professionals in Ukraine.

HP’s “Digital Equity for Ukraine” initiative is the result of a partnership with the Global Business for Education Coalition that will donate $30 million worth of computers and educational materials to people in need.

“The Ukrainian people have shown incredible courage in the face of unimaginable circumstances, and we are grateful for the leadership of First Lady Olena Zelenska and others who seek to end this war,” said Enrique Lores, CEO of HP Inc. “HP continues to mobilize resources to support Ukraine. Through our partnership with the Global Business Education Coalition, we will provide personal computers to students and families who have fled their homes and classrooms. Right now we need to take all actions to support those in need”.

The computers will be distributed to domestic organizations helping Ukrainians through a partnership with the Global Business Coalition for Education, an initiative of Theirworld, the global children’s charity. HP will provide computers to non-profit organizations and Microsoft will provide software support.

In cooperation with the Ukrainian government, approximately half of the donated computers will go to internally displaced civilians and the other half to Ukrainian refugees displaced outside of Ukraine.

“We are grateful for the support of HP and the Global Business Coalition for Education,” said Olena Zelenska, First Lady of Ukraine. “Their efforts and contributions will help students in Ukraine and beyond to continue learning and prepare for the future, just like any other youth in the world.”

Since February, the lives of millions of Ukrainians have been turned upside down by Russia’s invasion. According to the United Nations, nearly a third of Ukrainians have been forced to flee their homes, often leaving with only what they could carry.

Vulnerable children are caught in the middle of war leaving their homes, communities and schools. The Ukrainian government says more than 2,000 educational institutions have been hit by bombs or shelling, and millions of Ukrainian students are being educated remotely both inside and outside the country.

“Education is one of the first things lost and the last things restored during a crisis,” said Justin van Fleet, President of Theirworld and Executive Director of the Global Business Coalition for Education. “That’s why we’re so happy to partner with HP and Microsoft to provide Ukrainian students with the resources they need to continue learning.”

HP is a strong supporter of the view that digital parity is a human right and is committed to accelerating digital parity for 150 million people worldwide by 2030. And while devices are essential to achieving this lofty goal, they are unfortunately only one piece of the equation. It is for this very reason that HP is also investing in both teacher training and educational materials, including the translation of the HP Online Teaching Assistant into Ukrainian, to support teachers who are forced to teach remotely.

To date, the HP Foundation has delivered more than $3 million in grants to provide basic food, clothing and shelter to Ukrainian refugees and continues to match the amount of monetary donations made by HP employees.
