Hu: “The desire to never stay still”

The days of Federica Ferracuti, better known as Hu, they start every morning at 6: «I’m an early riser, a general» she explains on the phone from her home in Milan before describing herself as a charged, hyperactive girl, unable to ease her desire to do things. “Despite the period we live in, I tried to be even more active, and I did well: I felt the need and the hunger to have my hands in something “ Federica insists that, after having participated in AmaSanremo with the song Niagara eyes, arrived one step away from qualifying in the Youth section of the Festival, does not have a spare moment between the recording studio and the collaborations that will see her protagonist in the coming months.

Her stage name, Hu, is linked to a “gender fluid” Egyptian divinity that Federica stumbled upon by chance, reading a book on the history of the gods worshiped by the Pyramids: “At a certain point my eyes fall on Hu . Together with the assonance with the English “who”, I discover that he is neither man nor woman: it is the divinity who gave men the faculty of thought and speech and I immediately fell in love because it is not personified, but the synthesis of my dream “.

Since he gets up early in the morning and goes to bed late, he will get very little sleep.
«I arrive in the evening when I am very tired, in fact. I never watch films for this reason, I always have my head on the things I do or want to do ».

Have you always felt this urgency?
«Yes, I consider myself a restless person, even if most of the time I live in my cave in front of the computer to produce, and this generates isolation. Maybe that’s why I haven’t suffered so much lockdown: my life hasn’t changed much on a practical level. When the crisis comes, you either run away or find a way to evolve and I did just that ».

Music is sharing and led her to come out of the cave.
“We live in a society that is so fast that we forget to take care of those outside of us. When I realized the importance of giving what you did to someone else, something unlocked. It also happened during the lockdown, when I launched the idea of doing free production lessons in streaming every weekend: I thought there would be ten, but instead I found myself streaming with two hundred people for three months. This allowed me to meet many artists and to understand that the team is essential to do things well ».

It is no coincidence that she has proposed herself as a teacher since she has been self-taught for a long time.
«I started studying music when I was 11, I was a session player and I hid behind the instruments, I didn’t have the need to be in the front row like now. At 15 I bought a PC, the lessons to learn how to use the programs cost a lot, so the only alternative was to go to YouTube and see what others were doing. I have always been part of the undergrowth, even if going forward I activated: I wanted to get to know what I was doing, from there my passion for mathematics, synthesizers, the diffusion of sound was born ».

Do you consider yourself a nerd?
“Not at all, at school in mathematics I was 4. For a long time I had resigned myself to the fact of not being suitable but, when I took the exam in Analysis and I took 30, I realized that after all I was not that stupid . I like to work with logic in all processes: from cooking to music ».

Was the decision to no longer hide behind an instrument and to tread the stage dictated by logic?
«From the love of wanting to communicate something: I have always considered music a huge means of expression. As a child I drew and painted, a few years ago I built and created a quadraphonic installation for my degree thesis. I want to create things, not only in music, to explore new areas, conceptual art ».

A research that is also contained in Niagara eyes, the song that made it known to the public.
«In that text there is all the sense of the search for something, of an awareness. We deal every day with expectations, disappointments, expectations. It’s a bit like my manifesto ».

With that song he participated in AmaSanremo: what memory do you have of that experience?
“I’ve never been on TV before. I had always promised myself that I would go there when I felt focused on what I wanted to tell and that is why in the past I have often said no to talent: I wanted to have clear what I was saying. At first I was scared, but when the journey ended I felt deeply grateful for this opportunity. Since then I have been contacted by several artists, including the Big, who told me to keep the doors open to collaborate together ».

I guess he can’t say who.
«Not yet: I have learned that some things I have to tell you when I have already done them. That’s why I never look back when I do things, I’m always 30% to the present and 70% to the future. In Sanremo Giovani, however, I’ll try again: beyond the goal, the important thing is to acquire experience along the way. They are not to win or participate, but to live without knowing where you are going, with this hunger that can be positive or negative ».

Does this hunger lead you to dreams in particular?
«To the desire that my music can reach as many people as possible. When I’m in the studio I’m fine, I feel at ease and that’s what I want to continue doing: collaborating with artists, sharing with the public, sending a message beyond music ».

What do you think is your greatest talent?
«I have many defects, but also the great merit of listening to what surrounds me a lot, of digging. I am not satisfied with what I see, I am a very curious person ».
