Chinese telecommunications company Huawei has integrated the digital yuan (e-CNY) into its HarmonyOS NEXT operating system, which is used by over 1 billion users.

Huawei noted that now customers do not need to download a separate application to the operating system to use the digital yuan. The company has integrated e-CNY into its HarmonyOS NEXT operating system, which also supports smart contracts and uses artificial intelligence (AI) to make instant payments.

The service for managing e-CNY and expanding interaction with other financial services, including the Internet of Things (IoT), will be improved. By making central bank digital currency (CBDC) popular in everyday life, China is showing other countries how efficient and secure this payment instrument can be, the company said.

At an event held in Beijing to coincide with the opening of the science fiction conference, representatives of the People’s Bank of China said that the integration of the digital yuan into HarmonyOS NEXT will provide the regulator with more opportunities to monitor the use of the asset among the population.

Earlier, the South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported that Chinese government employees who receive salaries in the digital yuan rarely use it, and try to quickly convert e-CNY into cash due to the danger of surveillance.
